It’s interesting. I can’t even recall how many times I’ve heard that books are a dying medium, nobody reads stuff on paper anymore, and that everything is going purely digital. Now, working at a video game studio, which is as digital as one can get, I’m watching with a slight smile as another massive pile of new books, recently ordered to provide ample studying material for our new project, is being added to our already respectable collection.
Maybe books will “die” one day, but it’s not going to be anytime soon.
Of course, there’s a massive amount of information that you can find online, and we are all doing our best to continuously educate ourselves using that source as well, be it video tutorials, articles, online lectures, and of course the entirety of Stack Overflow ;), but for our latest game we really need to dig deep and research many things and concepts that are fairly new to us, and many of these can only be found in, you guessed it, books.
All I can say is that you can expect a game that’s unlike any other we’ve done before. With the holidays coming up, we will all have plenty of time to do a lot of reading, and once we return to the studio, we will use all that newly-acquired knowledge to achieve just one goal - to bring you the best game possible!
So maybe join us, and grab a book or two. You never know what you might learn. :)
