MADFINGER Interview: Luisa Bakalova

MADFINGER Interview: Luisa Bakalova

Hello there. Please tell us who you are and what you do at MADFINGER Games.

  • Hello! My name is Luisa, and I recently moved from the QA team lead to the Scrum Master position here at MADFINGER Games.

How does one get to do something like this? What’s your background?

  • It’s easy. You get up one morning, and you decide - this is what I want to do. Then you do some research, learn and practice and voilà. Or at least this is how it happened to me. 8 years ago, I told myself: "You should work on something that brings you joy, Luisa." Since I was a passionate gamer from a very young age, it wasn’t so hard for me to choose that a gaming company would be the best place for me. I started in a very junior position as a Game tester in a big gaming studio. I progressed to a senior position in a year. After that, I became a QA Trainer. A year later, I became a QA Team leader. I was a team leader for 4 years, 2 of which were here in MADFINGER games, when I decided that I needed some change. I was always interested in the production workflow since it gives you the opportunity to work with all the different teams and departments. It is also a very dynamic and agile job, which is something that I find enjoyable.

How would you describe your typical day at work?

  • Make coffee. Have a meeting. Update document. Learn something new. Write a report. Another meeting. Maintain tasks. Find a solution to a problem. Research. Oops, another meeting. Run. Lose coffee somewhere in the office. Make another one. Go to the QA corner for a fun chat and relax for a bit. Improve processes. Meeting, report, update documents, find solutions, improve, research, learn.

What are the tools that you use the most for your work?

  • My brain and Google search skills.

Do you have any “favorite“ bugs or bizarre issues that you encountered?

  • Oh, a lot! One that I remember laughing a lot was with the emotes in one of our games. We had this huge muscly, manly, angry, strong character that at one point we were able to assign to a ballerina emote. Needless to say, it looked hilarious to see him pirouetting around the battlefield.

Are you a gamer, and if so, what are your favorite games, both new and old?

  • I am a fan of story-driven, single-player, preferably involving magic and swords games, but that doesn’t mean I don’t like others as well. On the top of my list, there are Witcher 3, Dishonored (1,2,3), Plants VS Zombies: Garden Warfare, Fable (1,2,3), Divinity Original Sin, Disco Elysium, Heroes 3, Diablo 2, Machinarium, Walking Dead Survival Instinct, some of the AC games and to keep my gaming social life alive I sometimes play HotS and LoL. I’ve spent an embarrassing amount of hours on WoW when I was young, careless and free. Last year I entered the world of VR gaming, and I can say I am very excited that we finally reached that place where you can really become the hero in the game.

And apart from gaming? Any other hobbies or interests?

  • I am playing the guitar and ukulele. I like to sing alone at home (to myself and my patient neighbours). Some people will put reading books as a hobby, but since I could read I’ve never stopped doing it so it is more like a normal routine for me. Before covid - travelling to different countries, eating strange foods and learning local cultures was my most expensive and favorite hobby of all, but it was postponed for now and turned into Google Earth exploration and picking new places where I’ll go after life goes back to normal. I am also a fan of speleology, but lately, this was also put aside. I love board games, puzzles, legos, embroidery, writing short stories, drawing and cooking. You can say I rarely get bored.

Thank you for the interview!

  • Thank you for having me!
