I can hear the bullets zipping just mere centimeters above my head. The crackling of gunshots echoes across the battlefield. Gunshots and screaming. Are we winning? It’s impossible to tell. Out of my squad, it’s only me and one other, and we are completely pinned down. The others were slaughtered, but I actually envy them. At least they can rest now. I think I can see their spirits watching us from above, but maybe it’s just the shimmering of the air. It's over 33 degrees celsius, and the mask makes it very hard to breathe. I’m sweating profusely. It’s in my eyes, and it stings. The shots keep coming, producing sharp thuds on the barricade that we both cower behind. We look at each other, two brothers in arms. Is this it? Are we just gonna wait before they surround us and pull the trigger right next to our heads? Never! We know what must be done, and we will not falter! Charge! With a mighty battle cry, we run towards the enemy positions, spraying bullets left and right. I’m expecting to get hit any second, but somehow we make it across, and...
There’s no enemy.
They all got wiped out by the rest of our team a few moments before our heroic charge.
The siren sounds, the round is over. One point for us.
Paintball sure can get pretty intense.
It wasn’t just paintball that awaited us at Army Park Ořechov, where the MADFINGER studio spent an entire day full of team building. We tested our archery skills (some way more successfully than others, especially our lead game programmer, who I could totally see sliding on a shield and picking off orcs one by one), fired from an assault rifle, tried out an obstacle course, and finally sat down and had a couple of drinks accompanied by an absolutely delicious roasted pig.
Since we have lots of new talent in the studio (and we are still looking for more), this was a perfect opportunity to get to know each other not just over a glass of beer but also in a more extreme situation, like being pummeled by paintballs. And let me tell you, those suckers can really hurt! However, apart from a few bruises, I think it’s safe to say that everybody had a blast, and I personally can’t wait for another event like this.
Like with every out-of-the-office activity in these past few months, our main goal is to keep educating ourselves, strengthening the team, and using all that for our next big project. More about that is coming soon, so stay tuned. ;)
